Jo Harlow Video Interview – Long Live Symbian

November 9, 2010 at 10:43 pm Filed in:must see No Comments

You may have seen today that the Symbian Foundation announced it will be ramping down its operational activities and over the next six months will transition into a simple licensing body. I know that this was not an easy decision for the board. A few big companies announced their intention to leave the Foundation recently taking their funding with them. The Foundation was forced to reconsider its future and after a board meeting, decided it could not continue in its present form.

There has been a lot of speculation about Symbian in recent years. Nokia acquired Symbian in 2008 and established the Symbian Foundation, making Symbian available royalty free and in open source. At that time, this was the fairest way to ensure that the huge ecosystem benefitting from Symbian development didn’t lose out. Since then the competitive landscape has changed considerably. With competition comes choice and every company has had to make choices about their software strategy based on their own priorities and capabilities.

Make no mistake, Nokia chooses Symbian.

Do not confuse the end of the Foundation with the end of the Symbian platform. The Foundation has been very important in steering the platform through increasingly challenging waters, but the Foundation and the platform are not the same. Nokia has no intention to change the plans announced on the 21st October to continue to develop and evolve Symbian.

Nokia believes in Symbian because we know that it isthe only platform capable of serving our global audience with a range of devices carrying locally relevant content and services. We also believe that decisions were needed to make Symbian more competitive and attractive to developers. That’s why we announced we would focus on Qt and Qt Quick for application development. Qt is itself a thriving open source framework and already a firm favourite with many developers because of its ability to accelerate the development of rich, visual applications. We will focus on Qt and Qt Quick for our own development for both Symbian and the MeeGo platform, which means that applications developed in Qt for Symbian now will still work on Nokia MeeGo devices in the future (we’re planning 2011 for launch of MeeGo products). Finally, focusing on a single framework means that there will be no break between current and future versions of Symbian on Nokia devices. Anything developed for the latest range of Nokia Symbian smartphones would work on future devices, and importantly, any future developments of the Symbian user experience would benefit users of the recently launched products like the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, recently shipped Nokia C6 or soon to be shipped Nokia E7.

The Foundation’s decision does not in any way slow down our plans for Symbian or Qt. Nokia has already started to focus its own engineering resources on Qt and Qt Quick and we’re busy developing our own applications and services in the framework.

We are grateful to the Foundation and its employees for all they have done to keep Symbian as the the most used global smartphone platform. Now it is time for Nokia to drive where Symbian can go next. The end of the Foundation is the end of an era, but for Symbian, a new era is only just beginning.

Nokia Conversations – Nokia’s Official Blog Interview Damian Dinning

November 5, 2010 at 10:36 pm Filed in:must see No Comments

Having met Damian a couple of times now, I can gladly say that not only does he know what he’s talking about, he is a tinker too.  He is someone whom I admire as he is always testing things when it comes to his speciality, optics, but more importantly, Nokia Camera optics. Damian has been responsible for the Optics in both the N86 8MP device, and now the N8 12MP device, he even played a part in the N82 build too.

In this latest interview from Nokia Conversations, with Damian, we get to find out some interesting things, and I’m sure you will enjoy reading it.

nc

Remember that HyperX hack I posted about recently, where 30fps was now possible with the N8′s camera, with smooth quick panning?  Well Damian explains why this functionality was not available from the sales package of the N8.  Take a read of the full interview here.  Heres a couple of key points from the interview…

NC: We know you wanted to set the record straight regarding some negative views. Some commentators have suggested that the colour saturation on pictures taken with the Nokia N8 is weaker than that on other camera phones. What’s your take on that?

DD: Well, actually, that’s completely true. It was entirely our intention. People have become used to a ‘Hollywood’ level of colour that simply isn’t true to life. I’ve seen a number of camera phones where, just as one example, some people’s (white, Caucasian) skin would appear yellow. We wanted the Nokia N8’s colour balance to closely reflect the scene – and that’s less colourful than many people may have come to believe when viewing images captured with some other devices.

That said, we do try and replicate the ‘mind’s eye’, where there are some colour adjustments that are made under specific circumstances. For example, when people see a snow scene, their perception is that there’s a blue-ish tint. Cameras can’t see that because it’s actually about human perception rather than what’s objectively out there. So we add some colour correction to put some blue in, which meets people’s expectations of what snow scenes looked like at the time. There are a couple of other special corrections like that. All said and done, this is a very subjective area. As an example you may find if you were watching TV at a friend’s house you may not quite agree with the way they have set the colour and brightness. It’s also important to note that viewing images online taken by others of scenes and/or subjects you have not seen before, how would you know what’s right and what’s wrong unless there is a known colour reference in the scene?

Lastly, for people who do want more vivid colour, there’s a setting for colour tone. It’s now possible with the new Symbian devices to set this as a preference (amongst others) which is automatically set each time you start the camera. Reflections And Warnings – An Interview With Aaron Russo {Full Film}

October 31, 2010 at 12:41 am Filed in:must see 25 Comments

BUY THE DVD AT: infowars-shop.stores.yahoo.net In an historic final interview, filmmaker and music promoter Aaron Russo goes in depth on the insider-knowledge given to him by a member of the Rockefeller family. Russo was told– prior to 9/11– of plans to stage terror attacks, invade foreign nations, and kickstart a high-tech police state control grid that would track the populations’ every move with implantable RFID microchips. This information-packed presentation is filled with never-before seen footage. Throughout the film, Alex Jones breaks down the latest activities of the New World Order and how it ties into what Russo predicted. Aaron explains how the elite created the women’s liberation movement to break up the family and tax working women. Russo breaks down the deception of democracy– which is nothing more than mob rule guaranteed to produce tyranny. Russo also exposes the IRS & Federal Reserve. He blasts the unconstitutional and predatory institutions that have crippled the American Republic and crushed the people with bogus taxes, inflation and loss of privacy. Russo explains that he himself was persecuted in the late 80s by a criminal ‘retroactive’ tax scheme that attempted to levy new taxes on years already passed. As night falls on the Republic, Aaron Russo delivers a powerful call for the forces of liberty to rise and crush tyranny. Only then can the Republic be restored. THIS DVD INCLUDES: – Never-before seen behind the scenes footage – An exclusive

Video Interview with Gravity Sole Developer Jan Ole Suhr

September 26, 2010 at 2:36 pm Filed in:must see No Comments

Its no secret, Gravity has to be one of the best Symbian applications out there today for our Nokia devices. Gravity brings not only twitter to your device with a slick UI, but also brings with it, Foursquare, Facebook, Google Reader, multiple photo upload support, and much more. Gravity is available in Ovi Store here, and on Jan’s on website mobileways.de

I was overjoyed when Jan attended the recent #NokiaMeet that I organised, held at 1000heads HQ, I had a good chat with him, and shared some thoughts, and ideas on new possible applications.

Whilst at Nokia World I planned on interviewing Jan Ole Suhr, but my good friend Staska from UnwiredView.com beat me to it, so without further a do, here are the videos, there are two parts, and the interview was taken place in the Experience Lounge which was a little noisy, so Staska also supplies us with a text breakdown of the interview which can be found in full here.

Part two below.
